Watercolour Practice 1

Another out-of-the-blue day that I actually drew during ape lesson (shhh!) The first piece is a practice on wet-in-wet. I was hoping to achieve the same effect shown in this video (from 03:00 onwards) but I guess there's still a long way to go...
Watercolour Practice 2

The second and third pieces are both portrait practices based on photographs. The first portrait shows a pair of eyes spacing out and is dramatic in its choice of colour. Patches of blue and beige at the right hand side of this work are representational of the state of contemplation in contrast to the purple-peach skin surface.

In the second portrait, the subject is looking away from the viewer and showing a much lighter, dream-like colour scheme - pink, violet, orange, blue, turquoise, olive, and purple. The high transparency of the hair adds on to its illusionary and unsubstantial impression. Illusions can suppress fears and reality, but they will ultimately collide with the truth, against which they are dashed to pieces. Even so, I am glad to have found the unspoken part of me.
Thanks for reading!
p.s. can u tell which is my face? :D

hi babyyyyy~~~~ >;DDDD love your watercolor practice! it's so you~ and it's light-hearted, a bit random, with pastel colors ... and you're always taking zilian foots :) i liked that you mixed arbitrary colors haha! i think it's kinda like a new style of yours that is still underdeveloped!! oh, and the second one is obviously yours...== but maybe you can draw your face less narrow ^^
ReplyDeleteHey Hsi Chien!
ReplyDeleteLove your experimentative watercolour works! You've used such bold techniques with the courage to experiment. Also, I like the way you layer the colours to obtain the highlight and shadows effects, but my favourite part is how you use representational colours of many hues to colour and define the face as opposed to the conventional beige hues for the face itself! btw I'm guessing the second one is your face!

Hi Hsi Chien!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you've been so bold with the usage of colors in your watercolor portraits instead of sticking to the usual realistic colors. Arbitrary colors really brought a certain liveliness and playfulness to the paintings. I especially liked the way you were brave to use the contrast of the intensity of the colors in the first portrait! And yeaps your face is the second one! Haha if I'm not wrong!!

I think you are quite good at the rendition of watercolor. The colors painted on the face are well blended and encompass the very qualities of watercolor paintings, which include transparency, as displayed by the translucence of the colors and staining quality and tinting strength that you have displayed with lightened areas on the face (e.g. around the temple) and the washed-out quality which makes your face seem to illuminate.
ReplyDeleteI see the paintings of your face as expressionistic paintings that exhibit your individual painting style and perhaps a touch on your personality and character. However, your paintings lack the sedimentary quality that is most commonly seen in expressionistic watercolor paintings. If you add the sedimentary quality to your paintings, there will be variations between the light and dark areas of the face, which thus brings out your bold and brazen preference of colors and add in to the mood of the paintings. It's a good start nevertheless! (to get a better understanding of some terms I've used, visit this website http://www.fountainstudio.com/watercolor%20tips/tip-paint_qualities.html)
